Gallery Education at Quay Arts
Quay Arts is an educational resource that provides a unique opportunity for groups to learn in a stimulating gallery environment. We welcome visits from schools, colleges, community groups and other organisations and can provide both tours and artist-led workshops related to our current exhibitions.
Self-directed visit
Self-directed visits to our galleries are always welcome, but it would be advisable to notify us in advance of your intended visit to ensure that we are not running schools’ workshops in the gallery at the same time. Our website www.quayarts.org has information on current and forthcoming exhibitions up to four months ahead. If you would like information about exhibitions further ahead, please contact our Exhibitions Organiser, Georgia Newman on 01983 824160.
Gallery Education staff-led tour
If you would like a staff-led tour of any of our exhibitions, to include a discussion around exhibition themes, please call our Exhibitions Organiser, as above, who would be happy to discuss your requirements. A maximum of 30 children at one time can be accommodated. As we have three gallery spaces, we can include one or more exhibitions in your tour. Tour charges are: £40 for 45 minutes or £25 for 30 minutes, and must be booked at least two weeks in advance.
Artist-led workshops:
Kids’ Art in the Galleries
Most Saturday mornings in term-time we run workshops from 10am – 12pm for children aged 8 years+ (currently FREE, booking essential). A flyer with further details is available from Box Office. Each artist-led workshop starts in one of the gallery spaces, where an aspect of the exhibition is discussed. The children then create their own artwork exploring that theme under artist guidance. All of these sessions can be repeated for school groups in a gallery setting, at a cost of £100 per 2 hour workshop.
Schools and community workshops
Art workshops exploring any of the exhibition themes in our galleries can be delivered by our team of Artist Educators. Sessions can take place either at Quay Arts, at Jubilee Stores or in school and a typical two-hour workshop costs around £100 depending on group size and material costs. A whole day would cost around £175 plus materials.
Life Drawing Classes
Mondays, 3.30 – 5.30pm £95 / £90* per course or £10 per class
Artist Roger Butler runs two highly-regarded Life Drawing classes in the Anthony Minghella Theatre on Monday afternoons. This term we decided to open up the second class to high school 6th formers who want to develop their portfolios by working from the life model, and we will continue to do so in the New Year. Advance booking is required; please ask students to phone the Box Office on 822490.
Studio Quay
From January 2010, Quay Arts is starting a FREE after-school club for sixth formers who are looking to move on to further studies in the Arts. The Club is funded by Extended Schools as part of Quay Arts’ enquire programme (Arts Council of England), which advocates gallery-based education to foster creativity and an interest in contemporary art. The Club runs on Thursday evenings from 4-5.30pm, in one of our galleries.
Young Curators’ Programme
This new initiative will enable students aged 16 -19 years to learn about all the different aspects of curating exhibitions: selecting and hanging work; finance and budgeting; marketing and promotion; managing a private view etc. Students will have to apply for a place on the programme, which will be funded by enquire Phase 4. It is due to start in Spring 2010.
Learning Curve Gallery Exhibitions
Schools can apply to work with an artist, either at Quay Arts or in school, to produce an exhibition ‘in response’ to work displayed in one of our main galleries. To produce a Learning Curve Gallery show with an artist typically involves 5 – 7 days work and costs £750 - £1000. Quay Arts has a small amount of funding to offer schools to help with these costs, typically 25%.
Jubilee Stores
Jubilee Stores, in Newport Harbour, houses Quay Arts’ workshop spaces: Pottery, Jewellery Studio, General Workshop with Printmaking facilities, as well as six private artists’ studios.
The majority of our Classes and Workshops programme is delivered there, and the General Workshop is also available for hire (schools’ rate £10 per hour). Artist Tutors can deliver tailor-made workshops to suit your requirements (artist’s fee £25 per hour).
